  • 2 pounds beef chuck, cut into cubes
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 2 cups carrots, sliced
  • 2 cups potatoes, diced
  • 1 cup onions, chopped
  • 1 cup celery, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, brown the beef cubes over medium heat.
  2. Add the onions, garlic, carrots, and celery, cooking until the vegetables are softened.
  3. Stir in the flour, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper.
  4. Slowly add the beef broth, stirring until the mixture thickens.
  5. Add the potatoes, bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer.
  6. While the stew is cooking, prepare the dumplings by mixing flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl, then stir in milk and melted butter.
  7. Drop spoonfuls of the dumpling mixture onto the surface of the stew.
  8. Cover the pot and let the dumplings steam on top of the stew for 15-20 minutes until cooked through.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add red wine to the stew while cooking.
  • You can substitute any root vegetables you like.
